"Perhaps St Joseph’s Rugby has a unique record!  Josephians started playing Club Rugby before being invited to form a Rugby team in College!"
In 1953, a group of Rugby enthusiasts among the school population of St Joseph’s College decided on playing Rugby. As they could not get the blessings of the then Rector – the great Rev. Fr. Peter Pillai, the young Rugby players under the leadership of Lalith de Mel formed a Rugby club, calling themselves the “Hornets” !  Practicing at the Havelocks and at Longden Place they were coached by the Club players representing Havelocks and CR & FC. In 1953 and 1954 they played a few friendly

games with other clubs. In 1955, Rev Fr. Peter Pillai seeing the interest and enthusiasm of his young charges gave his blessings. Thus the first Josephian Rugby teamunder the stewardship of  Mahendra Dias entered the school Rugby arena playing schools such as Royal, Trinity, St Peter’s and St Thomas’s. Though losing all matches the young Josephian team was in no way humiliated

The Prefect of Games was Mr. Joe Ekanayake and the Master-in-Charge was Mr. Annesley Abeysinghe. The first coach was Mr. Percy de Silva.
